The French Left Wing

As the fighting ended Vandamme’s and Girard’s men established themselves in the villages from Saint-Amand on the right to Wagnelée on the left. Lieutenant Lefol wrote:

The III Corps, the Young Guard and Girard’s division bivouacked on the battlefield where they had so gloriously fought non-stop for six hours and our headquarters was established in Saint-Amand’s cemetery …

Sentries were placed around the village and we were able to rest on the fresh straw that had been spread in the cemetery, preferring those that showed that the dead had been buried there recently in order to use as pillows the small mounds that are always found above these graves.15
